Appraisal Office

As a way forward towards the resuscitation and re-organization of the import/export procedures of all precious minerals to and from Liberia, the Gold and Diamond Appraisal Offices, previously operating as separate and distinct units, were centralized into one entity known as the OFFICE OF PRECIOUS MINERALS (OPM) with a Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) as its sectional head. Jerome P. Wotorson, Liberia's first Gemologist, was appointed as the first CAO.

The Gold Appraisal office experienced a low level of activities during the period under review. It appears like the sanctions imposed on the exports of rough diamonds by the United Nations Security Council are having a collateral effect on the Gold industry.

Since the imposition of the sanctions on the export of rough diamonds from Liberia, the Ministry of Lands, Mines and Energy has initiated every possible action to encourage the United Nations Security Council to have the embargo lifted. Despite all these efforts of the Ministry, the sanctions remain in place.

Hence, the production statistics on rough diamonds remains virtually nil.
