Land Policy
Status of National Land Policy
The Department made its first step towards the formulation of a land tenure policy when it organized a land tenure workshop for the purpose of gathering ideas and views from ministries and agencies of government, including the private sector to chart a way forward. The workshop was more successful than anticipated.
All the ideas and views of participants, regarding the formulation of a land tenure policy for Liberia were reduced to a memorandum of understanding, stating exactly the way forward for Liberia. Participants agreed to use the Torrent’s system of Land Registration established in 1974 to replace the deed system. The memorandum of understanding is being circulated to the heads of ministry and agency, including the private sector for perusal and input. This will be followed by another workshop intended to target land owners, surveyors, local authorities and ministers whose functions are related to land administration or land use.
Meanwhile, a blue print for a land tenure policy document is being prepared by the land Adjudication Lawyers of the Department and Lawyers from the private sector.
Government Land Bank
Donors of the Land Bank are perceived to be the 15 counties. This project has not due to transportation and logistical problems to visit the counties and meet with local authorities.
