9 man technical team from Lands, and Mines Ministry over the weekend visited Arcelor Mittal’s operation in Yekepa, Nimba County.

Monrovia November 2, 2009  Lands, Mines and Energy Minister, Dr. Eugene H. Shannon at the head of a 9 man technical team over the weekend visited Arcelor Mittal’s  operation in Yekepa, Nimba County.

Addressing the management team of Arcelor Mittal in Yekepa, Lands, Mines and Energy Minister Dr. Eugene H. Shannon said the purpose of the team’s visit to Yekepa is to assess the extent of which the ore is being drilled, assessed and quantified so that the Ministry can know what percentage of iron ore exist at Tokadeh, Yulinton, Gangra and Beaton.

Dr. Shannon said the technical team first visited Buchanan, Grand Bassa County where they also to assessed and inspected the infrastructure development of the whole operation of Arcelor Mittal. Dr.Shannon however praised Arcelor Mittal for the level of work done so far in Yekepa.

He said despite the global economic downturn that has affected major investments worldwide of which Arcelor Mittal is no exception; he believes that the company is doing well and he is very impressed about it

During the tour, several facilities of Arcelor Mittal were inspected including the 150 bed hospital, the Lab, LAMCO’s main Ore Body, Rehabilitation of the Railway, and renovation of houses. The technical team also discussed key issues including Arcelor Mittal’s Mine Development Plan, Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), and the dredging of the port to allow bigger ships to come in.

Responding to the technical team’s inquiries, the CEO of Arcelor Mittal Liberia Mr. Joseph Matthews confronted the team with several concerns. Among concerns raised, Mr. Matthews mentioned the theft of scraps within Arcelor Mittal’s concession; logging activities and boundary delineation which he says he considers very serious problems. Addressing his concerns, Minister Shannon assured Mr. Matthews of the Ministry’s full protection under law.

He said according to the concession agreement between Government of Liberia and Arcelor Mittal, All Assets of LAMCO including scrap materials were turned over to Arcelor therefore, anyone extracting scrap materials from Arcelor Mittal concession is doing it illegally.

The technical team also met with Nimba County Superintendent Madam Edith Gongloe Weh and a cross section of Nimba citizens in Sanniquellie City to address issues relating to Mineral prospect and disbursing the County Development Funds (CDF) given to Nimba County by Arcelor Mittal
